    • 1Free Day at the Henry Ford

The Henry Ford is one of the jewels of the region – its amazing collection of historical artifacts and living history draw people from all over the country and even the world. However, all that authenticity comes at a price; it’s one of the most expensive cultural attractions in the area, with a whopping $76 admission tab for a family of four. Four times a year, Target sponsors Target Family Days at the museum, where admission to the Henry Ford Museum (but not the surrounding Greenfield Village) is free. Monday marks the last one for the year. 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 5. >>20900 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn. 313.982.6001. Free. Read More...

    • 2Hamtramck Festival

This scrappy little city that’s the hole to Detroit’s doughnut lives it up Labor Day weekend as they wind up the annual Hamtramck Festival. Events include a canoe race down Caniff (yes, canoes – they’re on wheels), a polka Mass, and a 5-K run known as the Golab-K (a play on the name of the stuffed cabbage roll pronounced “Guh-woomp-key; never let it be said we Poles lack a sense of humor!). There’s also an art fair, carnival rides, music, and of course, food (Hamtramck has one of the most diverse restaurant scenes you’ll find anywhere, reflecting its immigrant population). Most events noon-9 p.m., Monday, Sept. 5. >> Downtown Hamtramck between Caniff and Carpenter. Admission free.Read More...

    • 4Art and Apples in Rochester

Summer might be breathing its last but the art fair season is still in high gear. One of the best is the Rochester Arts and Apples Festival from the Paint Creek Center for the Arts. It’s the second largest art fair in Michigan and was among the top 20 fairs as chosen by Sunshine Magazine, a publication for art fair exhibitors. There will be food, music and kids’ activities as well as outstanding art. 4 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, 9 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept.10, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11. >> Rochester Park, Sixth and Pine Streets, Rochester. • 5Dally in The Alley

What once was a block party for residents of the apartment buildings backing up to the alley bounded by Cass, Hancock, Third and Forest has morphed into an all-day party with four music stages, food, and vendors of every sort….but it still manages to maintain its creative-hippie vibe. Family-friendly during the day, it turns into more of a beer-soaked party at night, so plan accordingly. Noon-11 p.m., Saturday, Sept.10. >> Hancock and Forest, between Third and Cass, Detroit. Free. • 6Natural Parenting Mom-To-Mom Sale

Mom-to-Mom sales seem to be unique to the Metro area, and they’re a great thing: You can pick up clothes, toys and gear that have often been barely used for a fraction of the retail price. The Downriver and Livonia La Leche Leagues are sponsoring a “Natural Parenting” Mom-to-Mom sale. Don’t expect to find Diaper Genies and swings, but you will find co-sleeping attachments, slings and cloth diapering gear galore (which can be hard to score at the more traditional sales). 5:30 p.m.-9:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9.>> Saint Paul United Church, 24158 Goddard Rd. Taylor, 48180. Read More...
